You've Got a Package!

Think how nice it would be to receive a package from our congregational family. Just before Passover, our 29 college students received tasty snacks, goodies, and a Haggadah. Judging by the thank you notes we received, the goodies were very much appreciated.

Thank you to those who donated funds for this program. If you'd like to contribute funds for future holiday packages, please send a check to the office and write "KOACH" on the memo line. Also, if you'd like to help with this fun project, please contact the office or Debbie R.

Seder with our Synagogue Family

On the 2nd night of Pesach, our synagogue was abuzz with over 100 people. There was such a warm feeling in the room, it felt like one big extended family as we enjoyed delicious food from Lox, Stock, & Deli. The family members ranged in age from infants in strollers to our senior relatives who are in their 90s. Guests came from as far away as
Israel and as near as Howell. After the search for the afikomen, all the children were given small presents (such as "paint your own" seder plates, and "4 questions" finger puppets).

If anyone has the need, we have a few large print Haggadahs available. You can use them next year. Please contact the office.

I'd like to thank Rabbi Klein for leading a beautiful Seder, and Annie Klein for helping with the Seder preparations. I'd also like to thank Shellie & Marty Carus for donating the 2 coffee pots which will be kept, in addition to our current one, for Passover use only. And thanks to the Slutskys for their donation of Passover wine.

On Sunday, May 3rd, over 50 players came together at the synagogue to join in a late afternoon of candy bingo and pizza. Surprisingly, all children over 12 were lucky winners and walked away with a sweet assortment of candy.  There were even some lucky adults also. It was a nice way to end the weekend and a great opportunity to come out, meet some new friends and some new prospective temple members. Hopefully, this will be an annual event and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Shabbat Across America

By Ellen Keller

Friday, March 12, 2004, became Shabbat at hundreds of temples across America, as part of the annual Jewish Outreach program. Many of our Hadassah members participated in this wonderful evening in their own synagogue. Over twenty Bat Shalom members and their spouses went to Congregation Ahavat Achim; over one hundred and twenty five people participated in this Howell temple.

Everyone was dressed to greet the Sabbath Queen; no jeans or sneakers. After the traditional prayers for wine and challah, we had a wonderful chicken dinner, complete with broccoli soufflé and kasha varnishkes. Jesse and David provided the delicious food. The volunteers were worked so hard to set up the tables and to clean up as well. After the meal, the customary Birkat Hamazon, blessings for the meal were recited communally.  After dinner, Rabbi Michael Klein, aided by members of the Men’s Club, conducted the Friday night service, greeting the Sabbath. Many participants who attend only sporadically were thrilled to see that prayer is like bike riding; you don’t forget. During the Rabbi’s brief remarks, he observed that in
Lithuania or Russia, our grandparents had no need for such a program as Shabbat Across America. They knew and appreciated the Sabbath. Here in America, so many other activities compete for our attention. After services, we returned to the dining area where diets were forgotten in the plethora of wonderful chocolate cakes and hamantaschen. Many of us remarked that it would be so nice if this evening could be repeated more often. Actually Friday night services are held every Friday night sans the chicken. We should try to attend whenever possible. At Congregation Ahavat Achim, Rabbi Klein has a monthly discussion group after services. Recent discussions covered Mel Gibson’s film and gay marriage. Other temples have other activities. Hadassah will have a Shabbat on June 25, 2004. Be sure to attend that night (and before). It makes you feel good. Just do it!

Reminder—The Shalom will be having a combined July/August issue.
